Hello,

Was looking at Backcountry Adventures's South Coast #18 - Main Divide Road.

Anyone take it before? Thoughts?

AND does anyone have a track from it? I have the 17 waypoints from the book, but would love to have the actual route.

thanks

Call the Silverado District of the CNF to make sure that it is open.

I've been on it off and on over the last 20 years or so.
Called the recording this morning and all gates are closed. So is Wildomar.

It's common for them to close the gates after a good storm and not open them all winter, sometimes they take a few years to repair all the storm damage.
They used to have toad closures from like April to September; but seem to have ended those.
They also like to close the gates during high fire danger.

Generally, I think they just like to close the gates.

I think I have a track of a drive from Maple Springs (Silverado) to Ortega Hwy at home.

thanks for the locked gate warning. I assume that there are gates all Indian Truck Trail too?

Here is what i am attempting to do: Have a cache buddy coming in from Dallas. Two years ago we did the route above pasidena.

As he is flying into JohnWayne Sunday morning we have 2/3 of a day before work on monday. I was attemptng to find a caching activity that wasnt just drive around in urban settings.

Ideas or suggestions?

Santiago Creek is habitat for the Arroyo Toad, a species listed as Endangered. Maple Springs Road crosses Santiago creek in a few places. The creek crossings are now concrete, prior to that they were natural and the road would get closed under the ESA.

Maple Springs isn't closed currently due to the Arroyo Toad. CNF's "policy" is pretty much lock the gates when it starts raining and maybe we'll unlock them in spring.

How far are you willing to travel? That will dictate what we can suggest.

I am picking him up from john wayne around 11-noon. we have till midnight-ish that day... so distance is not an issue, but driving to far reduces daylight and would rather not be off road on an unknown road much after dark. techinical should be low. thanks

Indian Truck Trail has had the gates at top and bottom closed for some weeks now; even before the most recent storms.
Here's a link to STR a MTB forum with some recent conditions on Blackstar Road. It's closed to normal traffic; but there are some pics of Main Divide and it's conditions should be similar to Blackstar.

karstic - Thanks for the info on the toads. I didn't realize the road construction was the reason for the removal of closures.

Randy - I didn't mistype that one. Some others, maybe.

In case anyone cares, Main Divide is open now. We drove up Maple Springs then took Main Divide to the first communications towers (right near Modjeska Peak) to break in the new truck.
