We were in Las Vegas and decided to visit Hoover Dam. We hadn't been there in 20 years or so...
The water level looked pretty low- global warming maybe...
Anyway, what we didn't know was that just to the south, they're building a bridge that will bypass the Hoover Dam altogether (US 93). It's a very impressive project and worth a look if you get out that way.

I've never been to the dam. I know about the bridge. Hope that one could still drive across the dam after teh new bridge is up.
I kinda think the brdige will spoile the aesthetic of the dam like in pictures that I've seen.
On the other hand, both dam and bridge kinda ruin the aesthetic of Black Canyon. |

I've been the the dam twice now in the last few years, the first no bridge and the second just as they were starting the work. It looked like a huge undertaking and the project has had some setbacks like one of the cranes falling down if I remember correctly.
Anyway, I hope discovery or national geographic is documenting the construction as this fascinates me.
Sadly the reason for the bridge is to move traffic from the dam so there won't be any driving across the dam in the future, thank the terrorists for that one. |

Cool pix!
If I remember correctly, Max is correct--it will be pedestrian access only once the bridge is opened.
The water level looks even lower than when I was last there a couple years ago...and even then the water level was amazingly low. _________________ Three eyes. Four wheels. |

Nice pics. I've known about the new bridge and I agree with the rest, the dam will be for pedestrian and official traffic after the bridge is finished.
I've done canoe trips where we put in at the end of the road to the right in the last picture. It's quite an amazing angle to see the dam from. _________________ |

Well, since they will close the dam; you know what that means - road trip to Vegas, baby!
Just gotta figure out when that bridge will open and try and make it by then. |

The views from the bridge will probably be much more impressive than what you see when you're driving across the dam. The views are much better from the sidewalk than the driver's seat anyhow. _________________ Three eyes. Four wheels. |
